Neuroscience Guide: Citation and Plagiarism

Citation styles

Plagiarism

Citations give credit for ideas to the originator and allow the reader to track down the original sources of the information. Failure to cite ALL your sources constitutes plagiarism. Plagiarism is a problematic and controversial topic in the sciences, ask your professor when in doubt or check the links below for additional information.

Manage your references

This is the latest citation management tool (including a bibliography generator) from ProQuest, which brought us RefWorks. Flow allows you to manage and organize your citations, like RefWorks, while also making it easier to read, annotate, and collaborate on documents. (See this YouTube Video for a general introduction to Flow.)
To create a Flow account, you'll just need to provide your e-mail address and create a password. Once you've created an account, you can then go to Flow to get started.

RefWorks is a reference management software used to create personal databases and generate bibliographies in different citation styles. Check the Online Tutorial to learn how to use it (Note: when using RefWorks off-campus, you may need to enter Denison’s Group Code for access.  If you need the code, from the RefWorks login screen, click on Forgot your log-in? You will recceive an email with your login-name, password, and the Group Code).

Manage your Bookmarks

Citing sources

It is essential to cite ALL your sources of information when writing an assignment or research project.

There are many different citation styles (APA, Chicago, MLA, etc). Different disciplines use different styles that reflect better the interests of their readers. Generally your professor will let you know which style to use. If your professor has no preference, choose a style yourself and be consistent, use the same style throughout your paper.
