Scholarly Books - What to Know

Scholarly books are written for scholars/researchers in the author's field and are typically intended to share research findings and contribute to the ongoing scholarly conversation. 

  • Author - typically a professor or researcher at a college or university
  • Publisher - a university press (e.g. Oxford University Press, University of Michigan Press) 
  • Audience - professors and scholars in the author's field, so there will be an assumption that audiences know the jargon and background information 
  • Review - usually peer-reviewed by other scholars in the author's field 

Popular Non-Fiction Books - What to Know

Popular books are written for a general audience and are usually intended to entertain. These books can be seen as casual or recreational reading: they can still be informative and educational, but the target audience is very broad. 

  • Authors - various backgrounds 
  • Publishers - HarperCollins, Macmillan, Penguin, Random House, and Simon & Schuster among others 
  • Audience - a broad audience 
  • Review - in-house editors
